Bodegas Viña Mayor - Spain
2008 Tinto Roble Ribera del Duero DO
The Bodegas y Viñedos Viña Mayor project began in Quintanilla de Onésimo (Valladolid) in 1986 in the wake of the birth of the official Denominación de Origen Ribera del Duero certification. With a track record of more than 20 years of success, Bodegas y Viñedos Viña Mayor is known as an innovative highly positioned brand with regards to the quality of their range of wines from the regions of D.O. Ribera del Duero, D.O. Toro and D.O. Rueda. Viña Mayor's position as an industry leader has been consolidated through the crafting of wines with personality, modern style and elegance. Their wines have repeatedly been awarded prizes by the world's most prestigious wine guides and top competitions. Tempranillo is the premium red wine grape variety from the Rioja and Ribera del Duero region in Spain. Tempranillo’s aromas and flavors often combine elements of berry fruit, herbaceousness, and an earthy-leathery minerality. Being low in acidity and sugar content, it is commonly blended with Carignan (Mazuela), Grenache (Garnacha), Graciano, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This 2008 is made from 100% Tempranillo. After fermentation the wine spent 3 months is American oak barrels. The color of this wine is a deep black cherry red continuing with elegant notes of ripe red fruits combined with well integrated oak on the nose. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and well balanced bottling that is very fleshy with perceived sweet tannins. The finish is lengthy, round and smooth. Pair with Roasted Capon with a Rovello & Niscalos Mushroom Natural Jus. Drink now through 2014.
Famille Perrin - France
2010 Nature Côtes du Rhône Rouge
Jean-Pierre, François and Pierre Perrin are proud to present their fine wines, inspired by the memory of their grandfather, Pierre Perrin. Using the same techniques employed at Château de Beaucastel, the Perrins have added some interesting appellations to their already impressive list of wines. "Jean-Pierre and François Perrin - chosen among the Most Influential Wine Personalities of the last 20 Years. The Perrins believe in natural winemaking, unfiltered wines, and routinely produce long-lived classics that are among the finest in the world." -Robert M. Parker, Jr's The Wine Advocate. The 2010 Perrin Nature Côtes du Rhône is 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah organically grown grapes. Certified organic by Ecocert, Perrin Nature is not only an organic Côtes du Rhône but also a great wine. Using their experience in organic farming at Beaucastel (one of the first big estates to turn to organic farming 40 years ago), this wine is a beautiful expression of fruit with delicate and soft tannins. The wine pours a medium garnet color in the glass, with bright red reflections. The nose shows macerated cherries, spices, licorice and notes of Garrigue (thyme, rosemary, juniper). The mouth is full bodied, with lots of fruit and ends with a great freshness. The tannins are elegant and fleshy. The dark fruit flavors make the Perrin Nature the perfect Red wine for cool fall evenings and there is more than enough body to stand up to beef and pork dishes. Drink now through 2015.
Laberinto - Argentina
2011 Torrontés Mendoza
From the mysterious South American continent comes a grape grown primarily in Argentina. It has pizazz and liveliness just like the Argentineans themselves. The Torrontés grape has for generations been blended with other white grapes, yet on its own, Torrontés grapes – in this case from the Tupungato region in Mendoza – result in a wine that is very aromatic and full of fruit, giving the sensation of biting into a fresh grape. This wine is un-oaked, allowing the full characteristics of the grape to come through. Maipu Mendoza is truly a grape growing and wine making paradise, one of the richest and oldest traditions on the continent. Located in Tupungato, Mendoza with an altitude of 1,100 masl, wine making relies on a large diversity of strains, climate and gravely soil. This 2011 offering is made from 100% Torrontes. It pours a yellow color of straw with flashes of green in the glass. In the nose it has vibrant and intense aromas of peach and pear with an orange citrus fruit background. It has a very drinkable palate that is voluminous and carries citrus with a tropical fruit finish. Drink now through 2014. Pair with all white meats and light sauces.
