Red Trio Wine Club - September 2012
Learn the finer points to many of the wines we offer each month. Our club wines are expertly researched and selected for quality, value and uniqueness and every one has an interesting history. Here are some of the wines we are offering this month:
Famille Perrin - France
2010 Nature Côtes du Rhône Rouge
Jean-Pierre, François and Pierre Perrin are proud to present their fine wines, inspired by the memory of their grandfather, Pierre Perrin. Using the same techniques employed at Château de Beaucastel, the Perrins have added some interesting appellations to their already impressive list of wines. "Jean-Pierre and François Perrin - chosen among the Most Influential Wine Personalities of the last 20 Years. The Perrins believe in natural winemaking, unfiltered wines, and routinely produce long-lived classics that are among the finest in the world." -Robert M. Parker, Jr's The Wine Advocate. The 2010 Perrin Nature Côtes du Rhône is 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah organically grown grapes. Certified organic by Ecocert, Perrin Nature is not only an organic Côtes du Rhône but also a great wine. Using their experience in organic farming at Beaucastel (one of the first big estates to turn to organic farming 40 years ago), this wine is a beautiful expression of fruit with delicate and soft tannins. The wine pours a medium garnet color in the glass, with bright red reflections. The nose shows macerated cherries, spices, licorice and notes of Garrigue (thyme, rosemary, juniper). The mouth is full bodied, with lots of fruit and ends with a great freshness. The tannins are elegant and fleshy. The dark fruit flavors make the Perrin Nature the perfect Red wine for cool fall evenings and there is more than enough body to stand up to beef and pork dishes. Drink now through 2015.
Tin House Winery - Santa Maria, California
2007 Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley
Tin House is a small family-owned and operated winery making some of the most notable wines to come out of California's Central Coast. Gathering only the best fruit from this region of foggy canyons and sea-swept valleys they concentrate on three varietals: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. Because they only produce limited vintages, their wines exhibit intimate craftsmanship and have a distinct artisan character. Winemaking has been a family trait at Tin House Winery for generations. Their 2007 Pinot Noir is produced from two pioneering clones planted in early California - Martini and Mariafeld in the Santa Maria Appellation. The result is elegant balance, character, and brilliant color. Vibrant aromas of wild strawberry, red currents, raspberry, and pomegranates are supported by an age-worthy finish. Aged 17 months in 500 liter French Oak casks, has given it complexity and richness. This wine will pair wonderfully with salmon grilled with honey mustard, grilled portabella and mozzarella cheese sandwiches, or assorted Chinese food such as Orange Chicken, pot stickers, and chicken in a plum sauce.
Belle Vallée Cellars - Corvallis, Oregon
2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Rogue Valley
Belle Vallée (Beautiful Valley) Cellars is located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Their 18,000 sq. ft. winery is located in downtown Corvallis, which is considered to be the heart of the Willamette Valley. The facility is designed to produce twenty thousand (20,000) cases of quality wine per year. Winemaker, Joseph Wright, has worked with many of the vineyard managers over the years, and has developed a great familiarity with the fruit they selectively contract. Joe's style is to blend the wines by obtaining grapes from a variety of top locations within Oregon. This approach helps build complex wines with depth and character beyond the reach of a single vineyard. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from 100% Cabernet from predominantly Lakeside Vineyard in the Rogue Valley. After fermentation the wine was aged for 15 months in Hungarian and French oak (65% new). The wine is dark, firm, and beautifully structured in the glass. It offers anise, black cherry and mocha aromas. Upon tasting, there is robust mid-palate weight, accompanied by a dark, earthy depth and structure. The wine has a long, smooth finish with caramel, smoke and molasses notes. Prime drinking window is between 2010 and 2015. Only 367 cases produced.
