Sweet Wine Club - August 2012
Learn the finer points to many of the wines we offer each month. Our club wines are expertly researched and selected for quality, value and uniqueness and every one has an interesting history. Here are some of the wines we are offering this month:
W.B. Bridgman Cellars – Sunnyside, Washington
2008 Riesling Columbia Valley
W.B Bridgman is the sister winery to Apex Cellars. In the late 1980s, Harry Alhadeff, one of the Northwest's most knowledgeable wine retailers and distributors, and Brian Carter, a winemaker of extraordinary depth and experience, launched Apex Cellars. The combination of Harry's knowledge and experience in the wine business and Brian's uncanny ability to combine the science and art of winemaking resulted in extraordinary wines - and extraordinary success. The first year's production cases sold out in just a few months. The W.B. Bridgman line was launched using significantly greater amounts of oak barrels compared to Apex wines, and the wines enjoy longer maturation in the barrel and bottle prior to release, giving them a more complex bouquet and a more supple finish. W.B. Bridgman was used to honor the man who in 1917 first introduced European wine grapes to the Yakima Valley. Riesling is no doubt a finicky grape to grow and to produce wine from, and when done well the wines produced are stunning to say the least, especially from Washington State. This 2008 is made from 100% Columbia Valley Riesling. Juicy peach and guava notes swirl in the glass of this beautifully aromatic wine. Mandarin orange flavors surround the mid-palate with ripe pineapple on the finish. Bright acidity balances the residual sugar leaving a clean finish. Pair with spicy Thai or Chinese food.
Dezzani – Italy
NV Brachetto d’Acqui DOCG
Renowned in Piedmont as one of the region’s most accomplished wine merchants, the family has 21 hectares in the Monferrato hills. The third generation of Dezzanis also picks and chooses from vineyards in Alba, Asti and Acqui in quest of the finest Barbera. The Dezzani family is convinced that the best way to protect our name and territorial identity is by focusing on the quality of their wine products and the satisfaction and value they bring to the final consumer. Dezzani in 4 words is: passion, tradition, quality, innovation. The Brachetto d'Acqui is made from 100% Brachetto and is the result of the slightly late harvest of those Brachetto grapes. It has an intense, aromatic perfume; with notes of rose, blackberry and raspberry. The elegance of the flavor, which is sweet, aromatic, fruity and of wild berries makes it particularly suitable as aperitif, cocktail, with fruit cake, pastries and ice-cream. Served chilled.
