Champagne & Sparkling Wine Club - August 2012
Learn the finer points to many of the wines we offer each month. Our club wines are expertly researched and selected for quality, value and uniqueness and every one has an interesting history. Here are some of the wines we are offering this month:
Vega Medien - Spain
NV Cava Brut Rose
Vega Medien was founded in 2007 with a strong commitment to quality. They employ the latest technologies to develop their Cavas using the traditional method. This winemaking tradition goes back in Requena for over 2000 years to the seventh century BC. This traditional Cava is made based on a special selection of Vega Medien's Trepat red grapes, fermented at low temperature, giving fruitiness to the base wine for the development of this cava. Once the second fermentation is finished it will rest in the depths of their cellar specially equipped for that purpose, under the best conditions of temperature and humidity. The time of breeding the traditional method takes twelve months. Light pink, with fine bubbles. Nervy blood orange, redcurrant and strawberry aromas are enlivened by notes of clove and cracked pepper. Clean and precise, offering refreshingly bitter red berry skin flavors and very good palate coverage. Finishes brisk and clinging. This is ideal as an aperitif. Suitable with shellfish and seafood, rice and pasta dishes, white meats, and desserts.
Scharffenberger Cellars - Philo, California
NV Brut Excellence Mendocino County
The history of Scharffenberger Cellars begins in 1981 in the heart of California's Anderson Valley. Situated only miles from the coastal influences of the Pacific Ocean, Scharffenberger Cellars also enjoys the deep soils and sunshine within the protected valley. Originally founded by John Scharffenberger, the company has gone through many transitions, including a name change when it was formally known as Pacific Echo from 1998 until July 2004. Today, the name and quality of the wine have been restored back to Scharffenberger Cellars under the new management of Maisons Marques & Domaines. Scharffenberger Brut is made by the traditional méthode champenoise process, whereby the wines are individually bottle-fermented before being riddled and disgorged. Scharffenberger Brut is made from its own 120-acre vineyards in the Anderson Valley. In addition, Scharffenberger Cellars has long-term contracts with select vineyards in the greater Mendocino County. This type of vineyard selection allows them to choose from the best vineyards in the area, which enables them to produce their trademark cuvée. The wine is approximately two-thirds Chardonnay and one-third Pinot Noir. The full malolactic style adds a vanilla cream character, producing a round and full-bodied wine. After approximately two years on the yeast lees, there are notes of freshly baked bread and pastry that enhance the more fruit-forward style of the wine. Finally, after several months on the cork the wine develops caramel and hazelnut complexity.
